MARK SHORTLAND VIDEO TUTORIALS
Mark Shortland has very kindly allowed us the use of some of his video tutorials and some of these can now be found in the Video Tutorial section of the members pages. These include his ever popular elastic band and card trick, where a chosen card springs to the back of a spectators hand. A trick that involves the spectator cutting to the four aces is also available both strong magic tricks and simple enough for beginners. My favourite however is his gospel message trick which is really of out of this world ! Members go take a look, and the good news is there’s more to come.
Sad News : Laurie Brockenshire Update
After a battle with illness that many of our members are aware of, Laurie succumbed to his illness last week (beginning of August) and has returned to be with the Lord. Laurie was an incredible man who was well known for both his passion for magic and puzzles.
From Laurie’s family…
Laurie’s funeral will take place at Holy Rood Church, Stubbington, PO14 2AS on Friday 18th August at 1130, the service is open to all.
Parking is very limited at the church and in the village so please arrive early as you may need to walk to the church. Traffic may be heavy in the area due to the first arrival of HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH into Portsmouth between 17th and 22nd August. Please be seated by 1115 and we kindly ask only older children attend if appropriate.
Although not compulsory, military personnel are invited to wear No.1 uniform (medal, no swords). Please do not bring flowers. Light refreshments will be served after the service.
SOUTH EAST BBQ
On Tuesday 25th July, I’ll be having an “Open House BBQ”at my home (South Croydon. CR2 8AJ).…Food will be available between 5 and 7pm, but you’re welcome to come any time after 3pm (and we’ll kick you out around 10pm). Obviously you don’t need to stay for the duration, but because it’s a weeknight we want to try and be as flexible as possible. There’s no plan or format – if you want to bring a trick, please do. If you don’t want to bring a trick, please don’t! Please contact Steve Price via the regionals or contact page for more details.

Close up Competition Winner Steve Price
Well done to Steve Price receiving the first Christian Magicians Close up Cup at the 2017 conference. Steve is well known to all our delegates, is our vice president and a thoroughly nice chap to boot. The close up cup was well contested this year with a great line up of high quality acts.

Comedy Trophy Winner David O’Connor
Congratulations to David O’Connor for winning the Pete McCahon trophy for outstanding comedy. This award is not presented every year and is open to nominations from the delegates. Even then nominations can be (and have been) rejected by committee. Well done David for an exceptional show and for allowing a live on stage critique for the benefit of our members.

Young magicians award Cameron Welsh
The committee chose Cam as this years winner of this trophy. Open to anybody under the age of 25 Cam showed us a great routine on stage that impressed and entertained in equal measure. Cam was a new member and delegate and its fantastic that we had him with us for the entire week. A delight to meet you Mr Walsh and a delight to see you perform.

FAME Weller Trophy
Phillip Sweeting was presented with the Farnborough Association of Magical Entertainers Weller Trophy after a near perfect performance of free will style effects. Phillip is a Christian Magicians UK Member who also runs http://www.bicycle-cards.co.uk a great resource for any magician. The trophy is being presented by our very own membership secretary David O’Connor, also Vice President of FAME and emcee for the evening. Congratulations to Phillip and we hope to see him soon at one of our regionals.
Sadly Roger Benfield from Dunkeswell in Devon died on Friday 30th December. He joined the FCMUK about five years ago after his interest in magic had been reawakened. He has taken part in some SW Regional FCMUK shows and has been to two conferences. Roger was a quiet but very sincere man and will be missed. His funeral will be on Wednesday 18th January at Ottery St Mary United Reform Church in Devon at 11.30am. Kindly written by Brian Hodge
Merry Christmas and Survey
Dear Members, from all of the Committee have a very merry Christmas. If you have a couple of free minutes over this festive season then please can you take a bit of time to do our short survey. You can only find it by clicking this link. We take our members views vey seriously as anybody who has ever sat through the feedback sessions of conference can testify. So please help us to help you make Christians magicians UK the organisation you wish it to be.

New LOGO launched
You now have your very own LOGO. Please not that there are some strict guidelines for you to follow. This is to ensure that the LOGO maintains its integrity for the benefit of all members. You can access the high quality image and regulations via the LOGO page from the members menu. As FCMUK no longer exists we have also been asked by our American cousins to remove the FCMUK logo from any web pages or literature. We would also like to point out that the words “Christian Magicians UK” should be used. Please do not abbreviate to “CMUK” as this is used by another company and we wish to avoid confusion in web searches etc.
Volker De Hass receives lifetime honorary membershipIt is with great pleasure that the committee would like to announce the awarding of lifetime membership to Volker De Hass. Volker has been a very supportive member of the FCMUK and FCM Germany. He is a very accomplished magician, teacher and friend to all at conference. This year despite having to fly in from Germany Volker took a masterclass in the linking rings, provided us with delightful stage puppet and magic presentation and gave a full two hour lecture to the children’s group on science and magic. Truly dedicated to magic being not just tricks but an art form we are proud and privileged to permanently call him one of our own.
